Family’s Scratch-off Tradition Yields $50,000 Surprise

Millersville man wins second-tier prize on Money Bag Multiplier scratch-off

Playing scratch-offs as a family gave an 18-year-old Anne Arundel County man an unexpected $50,000 payday recently.

His dad had visited Benfield Wine & Spirits at 401 Headquarters Drive in Millersville to buy scratch-offs for himself, his wife, the winner and his brother. The Millersville winner was handed a $10 Money Bag Multiplier instant ticket and began scratching it off.

“I saw a $1,000 prize. I was surprised and then I saw the 50X and I was like, ‘No way!’” the new player said. “I went to my dad and I said, ‘I think I won $50,000.’”

His mom used the Lottery app on her smartphone to check the instant ticket and confirmed the big prize. She won $10 on her game but the two were the only winners in the family that night.

“I was shocked at first,” said the winner, who plans to keep his Lottery luck a secret. The restaurant employee had his parents hide his ticket until he and his mom claimed the prize this week at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

The happy winner plans to use his prize to help pay his parents’ bills and then will treat himself to something fun.

His lucky game went on sale in April and has three $100,000 top prizes remaining along with five unclaimed $50,000 prizes and 14 $10,000 prizes.
