Federal Worker from Elkridge Lands $150,000 Powerball Prize

Quick-pick ticket delivers big win in July 18 drawing

A federal worker from Elkridge landed a $150,000 windfall on one of his recent weekly trips to the grocery store.

On July 15, he visited Giant #344 at 6020 Marshallee Drive in Elkridge and used the store’s self-service vending machine to buy a quick-pick Powerball ticket with the Power Play and Double Play options covering the five drawings from July 16 through July 25. The Howard County resident said he enjoys playing Powerball and Mega Millions on a regular basis, buying one ticket at a time for each game.

“I don’t play for retirement. I like to play for fun,” he said, adding that he likes to read in his free time.

He was going to scan his July 15 Powerball ticket to view the result, but first decided to check the list of winning numbers on mdlottery.com, and he was amazed when he saw the numbers from July 18. For that night’s drawing, his ticket had four of the first five numbers and the Power Ball number. That delivered a base prize of $50,000, which was tripled to $150,000 because of the 3X Power Play multiplier in the July 18 drawing.

“I was just one number away. This is the most money that I have ever won,” he said. “I won $18,000 on a cruise ship but never this amount of money.”

The Powerball jackpot is rolling, and now stands at an estimated annuity value of $202 million for the Wednesday, Aug. 3 drawing, with an estimated cash option of $119.5 million.
