Frederick County Woman Follows Dad’s Lead to $50,000 Scratch-off Prize

Finds top prize on $50,000 Cash game

She stopped by a convenience store to pick out a snack, the rehabilitation specialist told Lottery officials, but walked out with more than just a bag of chips. A sudden memory prompted her purchase of a $50,000 Cash scratch-off, which was one of the best spur-of-the-moment decisions she has ever made.

The 23-year-old visited High’s #049 in Thurmont, where she encountered her Lottery luck.

“I was in line to pay when I saw the Lottery sign, and that’s when I remembered,” the Frederick County woman explained. It seems that just a few days earlier, her father – who is a frequent Lottery player – won a significant prize with an instant ticket he’d bought at that very store. “I decided right then to get a scratch-off, and this was the one that caught my eye.”

Playing her $50,000 Cash instant ticket later at home, she was at first disappointed to discover only one match. “I thought there would have been four or five chances to win, but when I scratched the prize under the one match, I wasn’t disappointed anymore.”

The lucky lady initially misread the prize amount, believing it to be $5,000. “I was so excited.  I’d never won anything like that much before.” A second look revealed the extra zero that she’d missed. “It was stunning, like nothing that’s ever happened to me before. I could not believe it. It’s hard to believe even now.”

This Western Maryland win is just the latest top prize that $50,000 Cash has delivered to Maryland players. In the 11 weeks that it has been available, the $20 scratch-off has awarded 33 of its 160 big money prizes. That leaves 127 of the game’s $50,000 top prizes available.

The happy winner plans to use her prize to repay her college loans. The owners of her family’s favorite High’s store, which is located at 201 Frederick Road,  will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
