Garrett County Player Has Long-Term Plans for $100,000 Lottery Prize

Six Figures scratch-off yields fourth of eight six-figure top prizes

A Maryland Lottery winner from Garrett County has a long-term plan for the $100,000 he won playing the $10 Six Figures scratch-off: “I’m going to buy a burial plot,” the excited and happy man said.

When he left Maryland’s westernmost county at about 10 a.m. on March 14, snow was falling. Six hours later, he was in Baltimore in the final phases of claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters and eager to chat about the details of his encounter with Lottery luck.

He bought his hot instant ticket at Pen Mar Store #193 in Oakland, a convenience and gas station operating under the name Rite Price. He asked the clerk to double-check the scratch-off for him.

“She said, ‘I can’t cash this ticket.’ I said, ‘Why not?’ and she said, ‘Because it’s $100,000!’” the winner recounted with a smile.

In addition to his long-term plan for his windfall, the loyal player has some here-and-now issues to address as well. He will save a portion of the funds and settle some bills. And, of course, he’s pondering the details of a big celebration with friends.

For selling the hot scratch-off, Pen Mar #193 / Rite Price located at 458 Weber Road receives a Lottery bonus of $1,000, equal to 1% of the prize. The Six Figures game went on sale in December 2022 with eight top prizes at the $100,000 level. The Garrett County player’s win was the fourth top prize claimed. In addition, six prizes remain at the $50,000 level, 19 at the $10,000 level and more than 490,000 more in the range of $10 to $500.
