A Glen Burnie man unfollowed his instincts, and it helped him win $100,000 on a Maryland Lottery King of Diamonds scratch-off.
The big winner does not like to purchase tickets at the end of a scratch-off pack, instead preferring to buy tickets numbered 1 thorough 30, he said Sept. 1 when he claimed his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
“I never had any luck with scratch-offs with higher numbers,” the Anne Arundel County resident said, explaining he doesn’t recall winning any small or large prizes on those higher numbered tickets. (As a practical matter, winning tickets at all levels can be anywhere within a book, be it a pack for a $30 game with 30 tickets per pack, or a $3 game with 100 tickets per pack.)
The loyal player went against his superstition and purchased the 48th ticket out of a 50 scratch-off book. He made the right choice and was in shock when he scanned the ticket.
“When I saw it was a $100,000 winner, my eyes lit up,” said the employee of a local university.
He plans to pay off bills and use some of the prize money to take a vacation.
The ticket was purchased at Aquahart Liquors at 14 Aquahart Road in Glen Burnie. The Anne Arundel retailer will pick up a $1,000 bonus.
King of Diamonds has been available in stores for nearly a year. It started off with seven top prizes of $100,000 and this is the fourth top prize to be claimed. Three $100,000 prizes remain unclaimed along with tens of thousands of prizes ranging from $10 to $3,000.
