A Prince George’s County man was on an outing with his grandmother on Feb. 21 and, at her urging, decided to play Pick 5. As luck would have it, he won $50,000.
The grandmother and grandson were out and about on Saturday morning when the grandmother wanted to play her Lottery numbers. They stopped at Modern Liquors in Temple Hills so she could do just that. While there, the grandmother told her grandson he should also play. The Waldorf man agreed and played a $1 straight bet Pick 5 game for both the midday and evening drawings using a number that’s special to the pair, 81154.
They left the store and spent the rest of the day running errands before heading home. It was later that evening when the player checked his ticket and got a pleasant surprise.
“I checked the numbers using my phone and saw I matched the numbers,” he said Feb. 25 when the two claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “But I don’t play, so I asked my grandma to double check it for me.”
“I looked at that ticket and told him, ‘You got it’!” said his grandmother. “You won $50,000!”
The shocked player still needed an additional confirmation, so the duo went back to Modern Liquors at 2358 Iverson Street, and staff there confirmed the win and instructed them to come to Baltimore to claim the prize.
The winner said he has not yet made any plans for his unexpected windfall, but he shared that he will play again hoping his luck will remain the same.
Modern Liquors receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling the top-tier winning Pick 5 ticket.
