Grocery Shopper Bags Third-Tier Powerball Prize

Cecil County man wins $50,000 in December drawing

The holidays came and went while a Cecil County resident held onto a $50,000 third-tier winning Powerball ticket he bought for the Dec. 10 drawing. A morning grocery store trip led to his brush with good luck.

The occasional Lottery player, who claimed his prize this week, said he was leaving Redner’s Warehouse Market early that December morning when he spotted the Lottery self-serve vending machine. The thought popped into his head to play Powerball, which at the time had a $116 million jackpot. He purchased two $10 quick-pick tickets and went on about his Saturday errands. The next morning, he discovered he won on one of those tickets when he checked them using the Lottery app on his phone.

“I normally only win a few dollars here and there,” said the 58-year-old. “When I saw the message that I won $50,000, I thought it was wrong.”

The lucky guy scanned the $10 ticket a second time to be sure and it definitely was a third-tier $50,000 winner. He missed one number to win the Powerball jackpot.

“I had to have a drink to calm my nerves,” he shared with Lottery officials.

The construction project manager claimed his prize this week. He revealed he would have come to Lottery headquarters sooner, but he had to get all of his documents in order. The lucky player said he will put his prize in the bank.

The big winner found his Powerball luck at Redner’s Warehouse Market located at 311 Augustine-Herman Highway in Elkton. He won the $50,000 on one line, matching four white balls and the red Powerball.

There’s still time to get your Powerball tickets for the Saturday, Jan. 28 drawing. The jackpot has rolled to an estimated annuity of $572 million with an estimated cash option of $308.9 million.
