A Jessup woman believes her late husband – her “angel” – was sending her a message when a change in her usual Racetrax routine led to an $83,175 win.
The longtime Racetrax player was introduced to the game by a friend years ago and has played it nearly every day ever since. Along the way, she has won several sizable prizes, including one worth more than $20,000, she said Sept 16 when she claimed the most recent prize.
For her latest purchase, the winner stopped at the High’s store at 2861 Jessup Road in Jessup on Sept. 2. Although she does not regularly visit the store, she made her Racetrax purchase there and decided to do something else differently. Rather than using her usual strategy, she let quick pick select her numbers.
The next morning, she checked her ticket. She scanned it several times using the Maryland Lottery and My Lottery Rewards apps, still unsure whether she was seeing the results correctly.
When she finally realized she had won $83,175, she screamed so loudly that her daughter rushed into the room.
“She thought something happened to me,” the winner recalled.
Instead, the player had discovered what she considers to be a life-changing Lottery prize.
The win came not long after the unexpected passing of her husband, whom she affectionately calls her “angel.” As she reflected on the circumstances surrounding the winning ticket, she began to feel that the unexpected change in her routine and the timing of the win carried special meaning.
To her, it felt like her husband was still looking out for her.
The winner had several weeks to think about what she wanted to do with the money before her scheduled appointment to claim the prize.
She kept the winning ticket safe and ultimately decided not to make any risky decisions.
“It’s going back in savings,” she said.
A CEO of a construction business, the winner is also a mother and grandmother who enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.
The High’s that sold the ticket receives a bonus of $831.75 for selling the winning ticket.
