Lottery Rookie in St. Mary’s Claims $50,000 Top Prize

A hectic day turned into a memorable one for a woman from Mechanicsville when she won a $50,000 top prize playing the Maryland Lottery’s $5 In the Green scratch-off.

She claimed the prize Oct. 16 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, husband at her side.

The winner reported she has been playing the Lottery for less than a year, enjoying the games for fun and the possibility of winning some extra money. Little did she know that a busy day would lead to a big surprise.

Recalling the day she won, she said had a lot going on and picked up a handful of scratch-off tickets while out and about. Her initial purchases resulted in a $5 win. Rather than walking away with her winnings, she decided to use the money to purchase another ticket on her favorite game of late, In the Green.

She scanned the ticket and the machine displayed the message, “Winner, go to Lottery.” She immediately knew she had something special, initially believing the prize was $25,000.

Upon returning home, she shared the exciting news with her husband, who took a closer look at the ticket. That’s when they discovered even better news: a prize multiplier of 2X turned a $25,000 win into a $50,000 top prize!

“I was shocked,” the winner said.

Asked what she planned to do with her windfall, she said she hadn’t made any decisions.

After the unexpected surprise, she said she is confident about winning again and will continue playing.

“You have to play to win, right?” she said, echoing a longtime Lottery tagline.
