A spur-of-the-moment purchase after a dinner out made believers out of a couple of longtime lottery players. The Red 5’s Doubler scratch-off ticket they picked that night delivered its $100,000 top prize to the players.
With the prize came one heck of a surprise, one that made an enjoyable evening even more memorable.
“I didn’t know what to feel,” one of the Silver Spring winners said May 19 when the two claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
“Utter shock,” she continued, “Just impossible to believe.”
Upon finishing their meal, the two headed to their car in a nearby parking garage. As fate would have it, their route took them past Convenience Express, a liquor store that doubles as a Lottery retailer.
“When I saw the jackpot signs the urge hit me.”
Once mentioned, it occurred to both that, while having bought Lottery tickets for years, it had been quite a while since they’d played. “We went right in and each chose a scratch ticket.”
They took turns scratching. The first ticket revealed a $20 win. The second, the Red 5’s Doubler game, set this tale in motion.
Red 5’s Doubler is a $10 instant game that became available in December 2025. Of the game’s original nine $100,000 top prizes, three remain unclaimed. Also still in circulation are four $20,000 winning tickets. The store that was in the right place at the right time for the happy duo is Convenience Express at 948 Wayne Avenue in Silver Spring. Owners of the Montgomery County business receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize winner.
