After playing the Maryland Lottery since its inception more than half a century ago, an Oxon Hill man is celebrating a $50,000 Pick 5 win.
It’s not his first win, but it is a memorable one. But winning isn’t why he plays. Speaking after claiming his windfall Oct. 7 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, he elaborated, “I’ll play forever. When I leave here, I’m going to the store to play. It’s fun at my age.”
Over the years, the winner has enjoyed his share of Lottery success, though the recent win on Pick 5, his favorite game, is certainly a highlight. One of his strategies is sticking with familiar combinations and sets of numbers, often switching them around when making his plays.
On the day of his big win, however, he decided to visit a different retailer than his usual. He stopped at the Citgo gas station at 6104 Oxon Hill Road in Oxon Hill, and gave the retailer his numbers.
Later, when scanning his tickets, he recalls offering a silent prayer. Although he wanted to scream and celebrate, when the message indicated his ticket was a big winner, the exciting moment was one he kept to himself.
Since discovering his good fortune, he has shared the news only with his children. He plans to use his winnings to spread the joy throughout his family by sharing the windfall with his children and grandchildren.
The winner’s good fortune also brings a reason to celebrate for Oxon Hill Citgo. The Prince George’s County retailer will receive a $500 bonus.
