Pennsylvania Woman Crosses State Line to Fill Tank, Bank Account

Lucky lady wins $50,000 prize playing Multiplier Money scratch-off

“Does anyone win anything big in here?” A Pennsylvania woman posed that question to a clerk at Peach Town Liberty in Hagerstown when she stopped in to fill up her gas tank and buy scratch-offs. She can personally say “yes” to her own question after winning $50,000 playing a Multiplier Money instant ticket she purchased in the store.

The mother and grandmother often travels a short 20 miles into Maryland from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania to run errands and buy Maryland’s cheaper gas. Earlier in the year, she did just that and purchased two $5 Money Multiplier scratch-offs from Peach Town Liberty. The 76-year-old took the instant tickets home and played them at her kitchen table. Although the first game was not a winner, the second scratch-off contained the game’s top prize.

“When I saw that $50,000 prize, I thought I was seeing things,” said the lucky lady. “I had to call my son at work to tell him about the win.”

“I really thought something was wrong with her,” said the winner’s son. He accompanied her to Baltimore to claim the prize. “All I heard was despair in her voice.”

After work, he came to her house to confirm the win. The son scanned the instant ticket using the Lottery’s app on his smartphone. Sure enough, the message read that his mother won $50,000.

The retired Penn State University employee, who also has a daughter and five grandchildren, shared with Lottery officials that she will use her prize to help her family as needed and might look for a new home.

The Washington County retailer that sold the winning scratch-off game is celebrating, too. Peach Town Liberty located at 21322 Leitersburg Pike will get a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off. Employees at this lucky retailer can now also say with confidence, “Yes, someone has won something big in here!”
