Joni Ridgell of St. Mary’s County plans to put her $50,000 Powerball win to good use.
Sept. 12 was just an ordinary Saturday, a St. Mary’s County woman reported a week and a half later when she and her husband visited headquarters to claim a $50,000 Powerball prize. On Sept. 13, meanwhile, their lives strayed a bit from ordinary, for it was that day when they discovered the $50,000 prize that the ticket brought with it.
“We were grocery shopping, just like we do every Saturday,” Joni Ridgell, a graphic designer, said. “And on our list every time is a jackpot game ticket – Powerball, Mega Millions or Multi-Match.”
The residents of the St. Mary’s County community of California were enjoying a quiet Sunday morning when Joni decided to check the Powerball drawing results from the previous evening on her Lottery app.
“I didn’t believe it when I saw the matching numbers. I just let out a shout,” she said. This, of course, brought her husband running.
“I couldn’t put many words together when he came in. I just held out the ticket and managed to say, ‘Look at this!’”
That ticket with its four matching white balls and red Power Ball was purchased at the Walmart at 45485 Miramar Way in California.
The Southern Maryland couple will dedicate their $50,000 in prize money to speeding up their retirement plans.
“This definitely moves us ahead of the schedule we’d put together,” Joni said. “Way ahead.”
