A retired electrician from Garrett County just supercharged his bank accounts by matching five of the six Powerball numbers in the Aug. 30 drawing. When he checked his quintet of quick pick combinations the next day, he found he had a $150,012 payday coming.
No one hit all six numbers on Aug. 30, and the Powerball jackpot has continued to climb, reaching an estimated annuity value of $1.7 billion for the next drawing, which is set for Saturday, Sept. 6. The one-time cash option for Sept. 6 is $770.3 million.
The winner visited Deep Creek Grocery Gas and Liquors at 3562 Swanton Road in Swanton to buy the five combinations, plus the Powerplay option, for a total cost of $15. The baseline Powerball ticket costs $2, but adding the Powerplay option adds $1 to the price. The Powerplay option also boosts any non-jackpot prize by the amount of a randomly selected multiplier, which was X3 for the Aug. 30 drawing.
The next morning, he checked his ticket slip and had to do a double take after seeing five matching numbers, four of the first five drawn plus the Powerball. On a $2 ticket, that’s good for a $50,000 prize, but the Powerplay option increased it to $150,000.
On another of his five combinations, he was able to match just the Powerball. That resulted in a $4 win, which was also multiplied by three thanks to Power Play. This boosted the total prize to $150,012.
The winner immediately shared the great news with his wife and sons.
As of claiming his prize on Sept. 3, his only plan for his winnings is to share with family. When the mostly retired winner isn’t working, he enjoys spending time gardening and building furniture.
