Burtonsville woman claims $50,000 prize on Joker’s Wild scratch-off
A Montgomery County woman retired from the school system a few years ago and, like many retirees, needed part-time work to supplement her retirement income. While carefully budgeting to meet her financial goals, the Burtonsville resident included a small weekly Lottery fund so she could keep playing her favorite scratch-offs.
That allocation paid off to the tune of $50,000 after she bought a Joker’s Wild scratch-off. Her $5 instant ticket carried the game’s $50,000 top prize, which makes meeting her budget much easier!
The story of her Lottery luck begins with a stop at Giant located at 12028 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring. After buying the new Joker’s Wild instant ticket, the former school administrator took it to work with her. It wasn’t until a few hours had passed that she remembered the scratch-off.
The scratch-off fan began by revealing the prize check area under the QR code. She then scanned it using her Maryland Lottery app. After seeing a message instructing her to see a Lottery retailer, the surprised player physically scratched off the rest of the instant ticket. Once she saw her winning number match and confirmed that she won $50,000, shock and celebratory trembling ensued.
A big part of her budget involved paying off a prior debt, the winner said. By erasing that debt with her Lottery prize, she will have more funds to put toward savings and to donate to others, which are her two main goals. After that, the happy lady plans to take a trip to Europe and to visit her adopted family in Kenya. When not working or playing Lottery games, the loyal player volunteers at her local church and enjoys crafting gifts.
Her Lottery retailer is also lucky. The Montgomery County business will collect a $500 Lottery bonus for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
The Joker’s Wild scratch-off is still packed with prizes. The game went on sale July 22 with eight top prizes; six remain. The instant ticket also has more than 830,000 unclaimed prizes ranging from $5 to $5,000.
