Retired State Employee Captures $100,000 Money Drop Prize

Husband purchased her lucky scratch-off in Wicomico County

Congratulations to the Eastern Shore woman who won the first top prize on the Lottery’s new Money Drop scratch-off, which arrived in stores on Dec. 28. She recently made the long drive from the Salisbury area to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore to claim her prize and shared her winning story with Lottery officials.

The anonymous winner said she rarely plays Lottery games except for Powerball when the jackpot is high. Although big prizes had eluded the retired state employee in the past, she found that Lottery luck was indeed on her side when she received a scratch-off from her husband. After dinner, they were relaxing and watching the news when she decided to play the $10 Money Drop instant ticket. Quickly scratching and anticipating a non-winner, she asked her husband to scan the scratch-off’s prize check area on his phone. The message was shocking.

“It said, ‘Take to retailer.’ I thought it wasn’t a winner or his Lottery app was broken,” she said, “but we took it back to the retailer and they shared that we won $100,000!”

The happy couple took time to privately celebrate and make decisions about their prize. They first promised not to share the news of their winnings with anyone. From there, the husband told the wife he wants her to spend their prize as she’d like because he knows she will do the right thing with it to benefit both of them. She plans to save most of the windfall because she recently retired, will invest in their home by making some small renovations and share some funds with the lucky Lottery retailer.

Delmar Food Service located at 9521 Ocean Highway in Delmar also receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off. Money Drop is packed with prizes, including seven more $100,000 top prizes, 10 $50,000 prizes, 50 $10,000 prizes and others ranging from $10 to $1,000.
