A 19-year-old Riverdale man who occasionally plays Multi-Match was stunned to discover that his ticket had won him a jackpot, transforming him from electrician’s apprentice to millionaire.
“I just buy them sometimes,” the winner said Sept. 8 when he claimed his $4.2 million prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
He said he is drawn to Multi-Match because of its odds of winning, and because it is a game sold only in Maryland. He typically buys a few tickets every other week at Town Center Market at 4705 Queensbury Road in Riverdale.
On the day he discovered his win, the player had read on the Maryland Lottery website that someone who bought a ticket in Riverdale won the Multi-Match jackpot on a ticket from his usual spot, the Town Center Market. He went home to check his ticket against the results on the website.
Then he checked again.
And again.
“I was dumbfounded. I just kept checking,” the winner said. “I was like, ‘Wow!’”
After his triple take, he gathered his mother, father and sister to share the news. He showed them the ticket. His family was just as shocked and excited as he was.
The young winner graduated high school a year ago and has been studying as an apprentice electrician. His goal after high school was to build his skills and prepare for his career.
Now, his plans for the future have taken a major turn.
The winner said he plans to use his Multi-Match fortune to buy a house for his family and establish a strong foundation for his own future.
“It can open the door,” he said.
Town Center Market receives a bonus of $4,200 for selling the jackpot winner.
