Scratch-off novice “Mr. Money Bags” from Silver Spring walks away with his first big win of $50,000 playing the $50,000 Cash game.
‘Mr. Money Bags’ takes home one of the $20 game’s 160 $50,000 top prizes
A Silver Spring man is celebrating with his fiancée after claiming a $50,000 scratch-off prize. The big winner started playing scratch-offs earlier this year and just walked away with a top prize playing the $50,000 Cash scratch-off game.
“Mr. Money Bags,” a nickname given to him by family members because his luck is so good, was encouraged to play Lottery games by his fiancée. He did and won a little here and there.
Last weekend, he felt the urge to play and stopped at a 7-Eleven located at 20510 Frederick Road in Germantown. There was a line at the register, so he walked around the store until the line died down. “Mr. Money Bags” bought two $50,000 Cash games when it was his turn and scanned them while still in the business.
“I looked and out of the corner of my eye, I saw this message that said, ‘Go to Lottery,’” recalled “Mr. Money Bags.” “I paused and scanned it again, this time taking a better look at the message.”
Sure enough, the Montgomery County resident was a $50,000 winner. In disbelief, he showed the scratch-off to the cashier, who confirmed the win and immediately told him to take the lucky instant ticket home. The same message was echoed when he called his fiancée and mother to share the news with them.
“When he came home and showed me he won, we were so excited,” said the winner’s fiancée. She accompanied him to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “We just kept scanning it over and over again.”
“Mr. Money Bags,” who works as an electrician, told Lottery officials that he plans to use the windfall toward his upcoming wedding and pay bills with the prize.
The store that sold the winning instant ticket also has reason to celebrate. The 7-Eleven in Germantown receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
The popular $20 instant ticket, which went on sale in December 2022 with 160 $50,000 top prizes, has 72 remaining. There are also 85 $5,000 prizes and others ranging from $20 to $500.
