Scratch-Off Diversion During Movie Brings $50K Win in Eldersburg

Finding something to do while watching a movie with two pre-school age kids resulted in a $50,000 Maryland Lottery win that will set the foundation for college savings accounts for an Eldersburg family.

“That’s essentially where it’s going,” the dad said Aug. 19 after claiming the prize at Lottery headquarters, son and daughter at his side. “It’ll be a nice start for a college fund.”

He made a stop recently at the Martin’s grocery store at 1320 Londontown Boulevard in Eldersburg to pick up some ice cream. While there, he picked up a few scratch-offs because a kids’ movie was on the agenda for the evening.

While watching the movie with his wife and two kids, he scratched a $10 Money Bags ticket and realized a winning number, 25, matched a 25 in the play area numbers. Then he scratched to reveal what was under the 25 and revealed $50,000.

“We kept watching the movie. We didn’t believe it was real,” he said.

He later downloaded the Maryland Lottery app on his phone and used it to scan the ticket. The app confirmed the ticket was really a $50,000 winner. Still, his wife also downloaded the app and triple checked. After final confirmation, he made an appointment to claim the unexpected windfall at Lottery headquarters.

Also getting a financial boost is the Martin’s grocery store, which receives a bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize total.
