Scratch-Off Fan in Hyattsville Wins $50,000 Playing Pick 5

Lottery fun comes from anticipation of matching the winning numbers

Her preferred Maryland Lottery games are scratch-offs, but a Hyattsville player’s big win came on a Pick 5 ticket worth $50,000.

“Scratch-offs, those are my favorites,” she said on Feb. 15 when she claimed her winnings from the Feb. 5 Pick 5 evening drawing. She has won relatively small prizes on scratch-offs, mostly in the two- and three-digit range, the winner said.

But she also enjoys playing Pick 5. The pleasure is derived, she says, in “waiting to see if you win.” She places both straight and box bets, and has picked up smaller wins on box bets over the years. This $50,000 prize came from a $1 straight bet on the numbers 20783.

The Prince George’s County player is planning a celebratory dinner in the aftermath of her win and will devote most of her score to improving her personal finances. Asked if she plans to continue to play, she said, “Of course!”

Sharing in her good fortune is New Hampshire Avenue Liquors at 6501 New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park. The Prince George’s County store receives a bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize, for selling a $50,000 winning Pick 5 ticket.
