Silver Spring Man’s $50K Lottery Win his Second Major Score in Year and a Half

For the second time in a little more than a year and a half, a Silver Spring man has won big on a scratch-off. Most recently, on Jan. 28, he claimed a $50,000 prize on a $50,000 Cash ticket.

Back in June of 2024, however, he claimed an even bigger prize: $250,000 on a Cash Winfall scratch-off.

With the proceeds of his first win, he was able to help one of his two daughters clear her student loans and the other daughter got help with her purchase of a house.

The winner, who has a home remodeling business, says he isn’t sure how he’ll be spending winnings from his most recent score, but said “there’s always something.”

He purchased his $50,000 Cash ticket at the Sunoco gas station at 10550 Connecticut Avenue in Kensington and immediately used the prize check to determine whether it was a winner. When the big win flashed on the screen, he was stunned and decided to scratch the rest of the ticket to see how his win came about.

A consistent scratch-off player, he also occasionally enjoys buying a Multi-Match ticket, and he plans to continue doing so.

The Sunoco station receives a bonus of $500 for selling a top prize on the $20 game.

The $50,000 Cash scratch-off went on sale at the end of 2022 with 160 $50,000 top prizes. Of those, 57 remain unclaimed after the Silver Spring winner’s claim. The game has hundreds of thousands of other prizes ranging from $20 to $5,000 remaining unclaimed.
