Silver Spring Son Brings Home Big Win to Mom

Lucky lady wins $250,000 top prize on $250,000 Cash Winfall game

Last weekend, a Montgomery County resident unknowingly brought home a spectacular gift to his mother — a $250,000 winning scratch-off! He was running errands on Sunday when good fortune came their way.

The winner’s son was on his way home from grocery shopping when he stopped for gas. He filled up his tank at the Casa Blanca Sunoco in Silver Spring and decided, while there, to purchase some scratch-offs for his mom. He chose five of the $10 $250,000 Cash Winfall games because his sister recently won $500 on that game. The son took the scratch-offs home to his mother and she didn’t get around to playing them until the next day.

“She was on the phone and scratching the games,” said the winner’s son. “She had two left, so I grabbed them and played them for her.”

He was shocked to see the “money bag” symbol on the bottom row of one of the scratch-offs. The “money bag win all” symbol meant she won all 25 prizes listed in the scratch-off play area. When he looked at the rest of the instant ticket, each number had a $10,000 prize. That meant the scratch-off he purchased for his mother was a $250,000 top-prize winner.

“I showed it to her and she thought it was only $250,” said the son, who accompanied his mom to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize.

“I was happy with that,” said the fortunate woman. “But when he said, ‘No, it’s $250,000,’ I just screamed and jumped up and down.”

Excited but cautious, the winner signed the back of the lucky instant ticket and locked it in a safe. The two researched the Lottery prize-claiming process and ended up in Baltimore on Tuesday to take home the winnings.

The lucky lady told Lottery officials that she plans to pay down her home mortgage with the prize and take care of some bills.

The $250,000 Cash Winfall scratch-off, which went on sale in February, still has lots of big prizes. There are three more $250,000 top prizes remaining in the game, as well as eight $10,000 prizes and many others ranging from $20 to $1,000.

Also celebrating the win is the Casa Blanca Sunoco, located at 8875 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring. The Montgomery County retailer receives a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $250,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
