A Charlotte Hall man entered the Maryland Lottery’s winner’s circle full of excitement Sept. 23 after winning $50,000 playing Pick 5. It was a few weeks earlier, on Sept. 6, that his ticket matched the numbers drawn.
The Pick 5 fan plays the popular game often and was out and about on Sept. 6, a Sunday, when he remembered to play. He stopped at the 7-Eleven store at 9500 Ruby Lockhart Boulevard in Bowie and played a $1 straight bet on the combination 15670 for that evening’s drawing.
After making his purchase he headed home, had dinner and later checked the evening numbers on the Maryland Lottery’s website. He was surprised when he saw that he had a match making him a $50,000 winner.
“I am just so thankful,” he said when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters. “Words can’t describe what I am feeling.”
The electrician said that after he calmed down, he shared the shocking news with his wife and father. His father, who also plays Pick 5, shared in the celebration when he accompanied his son to claim the prize.
“I made sure to tell him to double check to make sure it was a winner,” the father said, adding, “I’m so happy for him.”
The winner said he plans to invest his $50,000 winnings.
Also celebrating the win is the 7-Eleven, which receives a $500 bonus.
