For most college students, having a little extra money can make a big difference. For one 20-year-old, though, a Powerball ticket is making this semester one he won’t forget.
The winner stopped by Maryland Lottery headquarters Aug. 24 to claim a $150,000 third-tier prize and share his winning story.
The college student recalls deciding to take a chance on Powerball after watching the news and seeing that the jackpot had climbed to more than half a billion dollars in early August. He wasn’t expecting anything to come from his purchase on Aug. 9, so after picking up his ticket, he went about his week.
A few days later, after work, he finally decided to check his tickets.
That’s when he discovered he’d won $150,000.
He rushed home to share the news with his family.
“I ran laps around the house,” the winner recalled.
As a college student, the unexpected windfall comes at a great time. While he hasn’t made any firm plans for his winnings, he said he would like to take a nice vacation and possibly purchase his dream car, a BMW M5.
For now, the winner is simply enjoying that, at just 20, he can tell his friends he won the Lottery.
Although he rarely plays, his big Powerball win has changed his perspective. He plans to continue playing and hopes his story might even encourage others his age to take a chance.
One thing is certain: this college student is heading into the semester with a little more spending money.
The winning ticket was purchased at Harris Teeter at 8620 Guilford Road in Columbia.
