Sykesville resident Nicole Rivera is our first Home Run Riches winner with a Grand Slam result! She claimed a whopping $5,500 prize she won as the Contestant of the Game.

Carroll County woman wins $5,500 through new ‘grand slam’ twist

A thrilling start to the baseball season just got a bit more exciting last weekend for one Carroll County resident. The cause for excitement: The crack of the bat resulting in an Orioles’ grand slam scored a $5,500 prize for Nicole Rivera of Sykesville!

After years of playing the Lottery’s second-chance promotions, Rivera was selected as a Contestant of the Game in the Lottery’s popular FAST PLAY Home Run Riches Bases Loaded second-chance promotion. She won $500 for being selected as a Contestant of the Game, and was on deck to win even more if the Orioles hit any home runs in her game on Friday, April 19.

Despite her growing excitement, the bats were quiet most of the night, and the game was not going the Birds’ way. The Kansas City Royals held a 6-0 lead as the seventh inning started, but Rivera was still watching and hoping. Three singles from Cedric Mullins, Austin Hays and Jordan Westburg loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. And that’s when Catcher Adley Rutschman stepped to the plate and hit a thunderous 385-foot grand slam, emptying the bases and delivering an additional $5,000 for Rivera.

The 35-year-old Carroll County resident said she leapt to her feet and was celebrating with her husband and daughter. “We were happy and jumping all around the room,” she said.

The grand slam twist is a new addition to the 2024 version to the Home Run Riches second-chance promotion and will be an exciting element for the Contestants of the Game selected for each of the Orioles 162 regular-season games. Contestants receive $500 for being selected and $500 for each home run the Orioles hit in their designated game — unless the homer is a grand slam, which means a $5,000 prize instead. So far this season, the promotion has awarded $34,500 in prizes from the Orioles’ 35 home runs.

April and May’s Contestants have already been selected, but there are four more monthly drawings to pick the winners for the remainder of the season. The next deadline for entries is May 27.
