A Washington County man and his son celebrated after The Big Spin Wheel landed on a $140,000 prize.
A longtime Maryland Lottery player from Washington County is celebrating a $140,000 win after taking a turn at The Big Spin Wheel at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
He made the trip to Baltimore with his son by his side for the exciting experience.
The family man said he has enjoyed Maryland Lottery games for years, especially scratch-offs and Keno. Around the holidays, he often purchases scratch-offs as gifts for family members. Despite being longtime players, he and his son acknowledged being somewhat skeptical about people actually winning big Lottery prizes.
That skepticism vanished, however, when the retired dairy farmer uncovered a “SPIN” symbol on THE BIG SPIN scratch-off he bought at the AC&T convenience store at 724 Frederick Street in Hagerstown.
The Washington County resident bought two $5 tickets nearly two weeks before his visit to Lottery headquarters. The first ticket was not a winner, but after scanning the second ticket using the Maryland Lottery app, he became confused when the message instructed him to “Go to Retailer.”
Unsure what it meant, he visited another Lottery retailer for help. That clerk advised him to contact Lottery headquarters.
Not wanting to rush into anything, the he waited about a week until he could show the ticket to his son and daughter-in-law. The winner said he is not very tech savvy and wanted their help deciphering the message on his Lottery app.
While handing the ticket to his son, he suggested he might be a big winner.
“You might be,” his son recalled telling him after reviewing the game rules on mdlottery.com and realizing his father had secured a chance to spin The Big Spin Wheel. He immediately scheduled the appointment.
On May 6 the Washington County player spun The Big Spin Wheel for a chance to win up to $250,000. He walked away with a $140,000 prize.
Still taking in the moment after securing the prize amount, the grateful winner said he plans to use the money to help support his wife’s care and assist his son with a renovation project.
The AC&T store where the winning ticket was purchased receives a $1,000 bonus.
THE BIG SPIN is a $5 scratch-off game that launched March 20. Players who reveal a “SPIN” symbol can scan their scratch-off at a Lottery retailer or by using the Lottery’s app. Most “SPIN” prizes lead to a cash prize of $10 to $250, but eight winning tickets will send players to try their luck with The Big Spin Wheel at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. That spin will award a minimum prize of $50,000 and up to $250,000. Five of those remain unclaimed.
Players can also win instant prizes on the ticket. There are two $50,000 instant top prizes remaining, along with thousands of prizes between $5 and $5,000.
