Uncle’s Lottery Win Leads Powerball Fan to $50,000 Prize

Relative’s Lotto win in the 1980s inspired winner to play same numbers

Winning big prizes runs in the family for a southern Anne Arundel County man, who just claimed a $50,000 third-tier Powerball prize. He said his relative won a big prize from the Maryland Lottery decades ago and that inspired him to follow in his uncle’s Lottery playing footsteps.

The winner said he often purchases his tickets at 24-7 Tobacco & Grocery at 119 Mayo Road in Edgewater. He recently checked his lucky ticket for a prize while at the Anne Arundel County retailer and discovered Lottery luck had paid him a call.

“I saw that I won $50,000 on the screen. It was the first thing that popped up,” he said.

The avid hunter told Lottery officials that his late uncle was a $1,000,000 Maryland Lotto winner in the 1980s. Lotto, the Maryland Lottery’s original in-state jackpot game, was replaced with Multi-Match in 2006. The player recalls that his uncle split the prize over 20 years and received $50,000 a year.

“My uncle played the same numbers every week until he won,” he said.

That inspired our winner to play Powerball, Mega Millions and Multi-Match using the same winning numbers. The irony is that his uncle’s winning numbers did not hit on Aug. 7. The winning line was the quick-pick line on the $18 ticket, which covered the first three drawings in August. He matched four white balls and the Powerball on the quick-pick line but had no matches on the two other lines of his ticket. The big winner said he will take the win and still credits his uncle for looking out for him from above.

“This was very surprising,” said the delivery service worker. He is undecided on how he is going to spend his prize.

Players can try to follow his path to the Lottery Winner’s Circle by purchasing Powerball tickets for the Saturday, Aug. 24 drawing. The estimated jackpot annuity is $34 million or the winner could take the estimated cash option of $16.8 million. And, from now until Sept. 3, buying a Powerball ticket could lead to winning a free $2 Mega Millions ticket through the Lottery’s popular Jackpot Reset promotion.
