Virginia Man Crosses Border for $50,000 Scratch-off Win

A McLean, Virginia, man is thanking his lucky stars after crossing state lines and scratching his way to a $50,000 win on the Maryland Lottery’s $50,000 Cash scratch-off game.

Last weekend the big winner was running errands and had just finished grocery shopping, before heading to the Brighton Beer & Wine Store in Gaithersburg. The occasional Lottery player saw the scratch-off display and decided to purchase one. He chose the $20 game $50,000 Cash and played the card there in the store. Not realizing right away that he won, the Virginia man scanned the scratch-off to reveal his prize. He was shocked to see he had a $50,000 winner.

“I still don’t believe it,” the skeptical player said June 11 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “I’ll know it’s real when I get that check.”

The accountant, by trade, knows a it about managing funds and when asked what he would do with the $50,000 win he already had a plan.

“I’m going to take a vacation, give to my church, have dinner with friends and save the rest,” he smiled.

The $50,000 Cash game debuted in December 2022 with 160 top prizes. The Virginia man’s win leaves 53 still unclaimed. There are also 62 prizes at the $5,000 level still waiting to be found and a slew of prizes ranging from $20 to $500 still up for grabs.

The Maryland Lottery retailer, Brighton Beer & Wine, that sold the $50,000 winner, receives a $500 bonus. The Montgomery County store is at 225 Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg.
