A man from the nation’s capital, who works in Maryland, was in the right place at the right time. While in a 7-Eleven, he noticed there was only one King of Diamonds scratch ticket left in the dispenser. He took a chance on the lone $10 ticket and it turned out to be a $100,000 top prize winner.
He claimed the prize Jan. 13 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
He came across this ticket at the 7-Eleven at 3570 Crain Highway in Bowie. He was at home later that day when he scratched it. Afterwards, he thought he had won, but he wasn’t entirely sure. He was able to enlist the help of a friend who is an avid Lottery player and the friend confirmed it was a big win.
His ticket had several matches totaling an initial $2,000 prize, but the multiplier on the upper right of the ticket said X50, turning a $2,000 win into $100,000.
The D.C. native couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He began calling friends and family to share the good news. He works on HVAC systems and is very near to retirement after 20-plus years. Not many plans have been made for his winnings, except to pay off a few small debts.
The 7-Eleven got lucky on the side, as the store receives a bonus of $1,000.
The King of Diamonds ticket was launched this past September. This prize is only the second of seven at the top-tier $100,000 level to have been claimed, leaving another five, along with thousands at lower tier levels.
