Lucky date secures top prize in Pick 5 drawing
A Cecil County grandmother was smiling from ear to ear at Lottery headquarters as she claimed a $50,000 prize won playing Pick 5 over the weekend.
The big winner was at home, checking her numbers on her phone for the March 9 midday drawing, when she realized Lottery luck had come her way. The loyal player was amazed when she discovered her $1 straight bet matched the exact five numbers in the drawing, giving her a $50,000 prize.
“I sent a screenshot to my sister and told her to call me,” she said.
The Eastern Shore resident plans to use the money to pay bills and said she will probably spend the extra money on her grandsons.
There was a major significance to her winning numbers, which are based on her wedding anniversary. She has played those five numbers since her husband passed away a few years ago.
“I have never won this much,” she said. “The most money that I had won was $1,000.”
When not playing Pick 5, the retiree enjoys fishing and spending time with her grandsons.
She bought her winning ticket at Stop & Go convenience store at 1 East Cecil Avenue in North East. The Cecil County retailer will receive a bonus of $500 from the Lottery for selling a $50,000-winning Pick 5 ticket.
