West Virginia Man’s Jackpot Game Focus Leads to $50,000 Powerball Prize

A frequent lottery player from West Virginia who once set a $100 scratch-off prize as his personal best raised the bar for what he considers big, thanks to a $50,000 Powerball win on a ticket he purchased in Frederick.

“I remember feeling great when I won that $100,” he said Dec. 26 when he claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “It made my day!”

If a $100 prize made his day, his $50,000 win in the Dec. 13 Powerball drawing has him covered for at least a few months.

Unlike many who were drawn to Powerball during the recent jackpot run that topped off at $1.818 billion, the West Virginia roofer has focused on Mega Millions and Powerball since early last year, he said.

“I figure that if I’m going to get lucky, I might as well play for as big a prize as I can,” he said. His strategy worked out faster than he’d expected. “With these long-odds games, I didn’t really expect to ever win this much and certainly not this soon, but you never know.”

The winner will dedicate his Powerball winnings to his effort to buy a new home. He purchased his $50,000 winner from the Sheetz convenience store at 5601 Buckeystown Pike in Frederick.
