West Virginia Retiree Excavates $50,000 Prize in Diamond Mine X9 game

Claimed his top prize on March 21

Crossing the Maryland state line to play scratch-offs was well worth the drive for a West Virginia man, who won $50,000 playing the $5 Diamond Mine X9 game.

The 79-year-old went into the Best Price Market at 21413 Chesapeake Avenue in McCoole, Maryland with plans to buy a $5 instant ticket. After making his purchase, he scratched off the game and scanned it for a prize.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. The resident of a small town in the Mountain State, the loyal player was shocked to find out that he won the game’s top prize. The retiree said that he has won quite a few times in the past, but none of the prizes were as large as this one. In addition to playing scratch-offs, he also enjoys the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 4 game and spending time with his Boston Terrier.

As of now, the winner doesn’t have any plans for his prize other than keeping news of it as quiet as possible.

The Allegany County retailer that sold the lucky scratch-off is also a winner. Best Price Market will earn a $500 bonus from the Lottery for its role in selling a $50,000 top-prize winning instant ticket.
