Brian Murray of Westminster plans to take his girlfriend to Puerto Rico, thanks to a $50,000 win on a Gold Rush 7s Tripler scratch-off.
Puerto Rico tops destination list after big win
Flush with excitement about winning $50,000 on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off, Westminster’s Brian Murray pulled on a T-shirt featuring thrash metal icons Slayer on Aug. 14 and made his way to Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
“I wore my favorite band shirt to claim,” Brian said after completing the paperwork for his top-prize scratch-off win. “This is the coolest thing that’s ever happened to me.” Typically, he buys in the range of $20 to $40 in scratch-offs every other week.
On a recent excursion to pick up coffee sweetener for his girlfriend at his local Walmart, Brian brought along two winning scratch-offs worth $10 each. He scanned those games at the Lottery vending machine and used the credit to buy four $5 Gold Rush 7s Tripler scratch-offs. That’s when he got a $50,000 surprise.
“I couldn’t believe it!” said the Carroll County resident.
Number 1 on his list of things to do with his winnings is take a trip to Puerto Rico with his girlfriend. “I’m going to take the most awesome person in the world to the most awesome place,” he said.
Originally from the Gulf Coast, he is an avid angler who enjoys fishing the tidal Chesapeake as well as ocean waters. An “epic fishing trip” is also part of his plan for the prize. He and a friend were planning an excursion to fish for red drum, and that’s a contender for his winnings. Whatever’s left will go toward paying off his car loan, Brian said.
Sharing in his good fortune is the Walmart where he bought the lucky scratch-off. The Carroll County store at 280 Woodward Road receives a Lottery bonus of $500, equal to 1% of the prize, for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
