A 21-year-old Glen Burnie woman is celebrating a financial jumpstart to her adult life after scoring a $50,000 prize when she stopped for snacks and added a Maryland Lottery scratch-off to her purchase.
About a year ago she decided to try playing the Lottery after hearing stories about other people winning big prizes and has been playing ever since, she said Sept. 23 when she claimed her winnings at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
Her high-value purchase was made at the Buy-N-Go store at 13 Aquahart Road in Glen Burnie, and she scratched the ticket when she got home. Initially she was skeptical about what she found when playing.
“I thought it was fake, but I’m happy it wasn’t,” she said.
Wanting to make sure her eyes weren’t deceiving her, she quickly used the Maryland Lottery’s My Lottery Rewards app to scan the ticket and verify her prize. The win came on the $20 game $50,000 Cash.
Since winning, she has kept her good fortune mostly to herself, having only told her mother about the win, and plans to keep a low profile as she decides what to do with her newfound windfall.
Regarding her plan, she has a simple answer: she plans to save it and hopes to make good use of the money.
Despite her big win, the winner isn’t ready to retire from the game. She said she plans to continue playing the Lottery and hopes to win again someday.
Buy-N-Go receives a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the top prize winner.
The $50,000 Cash game has been available since late 2022 and has 51 of the original 160 $50,000 top prizes remaining. The game ends in May 2027.
