A $50,000 Pick 5 win in the July 18 midday drawing has done much to lessen the anxiety a Queen Anne’s County woman had been experiencing concerning her upcoming retirement.
That welcome relief, however, didn’t come right away, the top-prize winner said July 22 after claiming her prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
“I refused to believe it,” the soon-to-be former office worker said. “I knew what I was seeing. I knew what my Lottery app was telling me. I just wouldn’t let myself accept that it had happened.” This was the initial reaction to her big win, and the doubt persisted for about an hour.
“Then the happiness flooded in,” she said, adding later, “This money answers some questions I’d had about my retirement. I’m feeling much better about things,” she said.
The Eastern Shore woman says she’s mostly a loyal scratch-off player.
“Every once in a while, I try something different, though,” she said. This was the case on July 18 when she visited Airpark BP in Gaithersburg.
“I picked out a couple of scratch tickets and asked for a Pick 5 ticket. Just like that, without even thinking about it.”
The winner confirmed that her $50,000 Pick 5 prize is the biggest she’s ever won: “I’ve never won anything like this. I’ve never even met anyone who has won something like this,” she said.
Airpark BP is at 19230 Woodfield Road and receives a $500 bonus from the Lottery, equal to 1% of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.
