Buying a house is a much more realistic possibility for Baltimore’s Tamicka Dixon-Epps after her $100,000 Double Your Money win.
A Baltimore resident visited Lottery headquarters on Oct. 7 to accomplish a task she never expected to face – the collection of a $100,000 lottery prize. It wasn’t the odds that had caused her to dismiss the possibility, it was that she has never ever had any inclination to buy lottery tickets.
“I have played once or twice in my life,” Tamicka Dixon-Epps admitted after claiming her prize, clarifying that those occasions occurred only when buying tickets along with a group of co-workers.
“Nothing against the Lottery, but on my own it just wouldn’t occur to me to buy a ticket.”
Luckily for her, she wasn’t “on her own” on a recent weekend when good fortune was ready to smile on her.
It seems a friend had asked Tamicka to meet for a conversation at a spot convenient to both – a Citgo gas station on Harford Road that doubles as a lottery retailer.
“After we finished talking she went inside to buy a lottery ticket. She encouraged me to try one, so I did.”
Selecting a Double Your Money game from the store’s scratch-off ticket offerings, the Baltimore woman played it, scanned it, and then scanned it three more times because it kept showing she was a big winner.
“I just didn’t believe it. $100,000? There’s no way that could be right.”
After the station’s manager confirmed the win, Tamicka experienced something very near a panic attack, she recalled.
“My friend was jumping up and down and screaming, and here I was, knees shaking, almost collapsing, covered in sweat.”
Double Your Money is a $10 ticket that debuted in July. The game still has nine $100,000 top prizes and two $50,000 second-tier prizes to entice players. The Citgo station at 2330 Harford Road in Baltimore receives a $1,000 bonus from the lottery for selling the top-prize winner.
