Alaska Man Wins $150K while Visiting Parents in His Native Maryland

An Alaska man’s trip to his native Maryland to visit family came with an added bonus thanks to the Lottery: $150,021 in Powerball prize money.

Years ago, the winner and his wife traded the fast-paced life of the Eastern Seaboard for quieter surroundings in one of Alaska’s many wilderness outpost communities. He accepted an IT director position at a hospital. His career keeps him on the move, and whenever he travels his tradition remains the same: playing the Lottery.

His Maryland win came during a short visit to Baltimore to spend a few days with his parents. After seeing the growing Powerball jackpot featured on the news, he decided to purchase a ticket at the Fastop convenience store at 8834 Chesapeake Avenue in the Calvert County community of North Beach.

The following day, he headed to St. Louis for work. His parents encouraged him to check his ticket using the Maryland Lottery app. What began as an ordinary travel day quickly turned into an unforgettable moment when he discovered his $150,021 win.

“Ecstatic with winning a year’s salary!” he said Oct. 19 when he claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.

With a significant prize in hand, he is already thinking about the future. When asked what he plans to do with his winnings, he said he wants to invest in real estate, build assets and create greater financial security for the years ahead.

Although he now lives thousands of miles away, the winner plans to keep playing the Lottery whenever he can, especially while traveling.
