He was halfway across the parking lot when he decided to listen to the voice and turn around, an excited player said Sept. 18 when visiting Baltimore to claim the prize he came so very close to missing.
“Something” told him to go back inside, he recalled. The Charles County man credits that voice for his $50,000 Pick 5 win.
“I’ve been playing Pick 5 since it first started,” the electrician said. Having just left a Wawa convenience store where he’d picked up lunch, he at first ignored the call to return.
“I was hungry. I just wanted to get back to the work site and eat. And besides, I’d already bought my tickets that morning,” he said.
One thing troubled him, though. Troubled him enough to double back to the parking spot he’d just left.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about it, because there was one of my favorite combinations that I didn’t play.”
Guess what?
When the Southern Maryland man checked the Pick 5 results late that night, he immediately covered them with his hand.
“I had seen the first two, and they were right. I uncovered the next one and the next and they were right.” Before revealing the final digit, he looked skyward and thought, ‘Please be a 4.’
Guess what again? It was a 4. Pick 5’s latest top-prize winner said his winning combination, 2-6-2-7-4, is a mish-mash of family birthdays.
“It was so late that I couldn’t celebrate. I didn’t want to wake everybody up.”
The Wawa at 6101 Allentown Road in Suitland sold the $50,000 winner. The Prince George’s County business receives a $500 bonus for having done so.
