A New Home on the Horizon for Silver Spring Man

$50,000 win on $50,000 Cash scratch-off arrives right on time

A 39-year-old Montgomery County man was smiling from ear to ear this week when he entered Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. He claimed a $50,000 scratch-off prize, making his dream of home ownership closer to reality.

The lucky player was on his way home from work one day last week when he stopped at Route 1 Liquors in Beltsville to play some of his favorite scratch-off games. He decided on the popular $50,000 Cash instant game and purchased two of the $20 instant tickets. The first of the two was not a winner, but the second game had him on cloud nine.

“I was so happy when I saw the prize beneath the ‘stack of coins’ symbol,” said the retail employee, smiling at the memory.

The married father of two immediately left the store and went home, where he shared the amazing news with his wife and brother.

“He said, ‘I have a surprise,’” said the winner’s brother, who accompanied his sibling to claim the prize. “I thought he won $50 or $500, not $50,000!”

The Silver Spring winner signed the back of his ticket, made an appointment and claimed the $50,000 prize this week. He shared with Lottery officials that he has been saving up to purchase a home. He is one step closer, thanks to the big win.

The Prince George’s County retailer, Route 1 Liquors located at 10500 Baltimore Avenue, is a winner, too. The business will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a top-prize winning scratch-off worth $50,000. The $50,000 Cash instant ticket went on sale in December 2022 with 160 $50,000 top prizes; there are 98 top prizes remaining along with others that range from $20 to $5,000.
