A busy mechanic from Clinton waited three days to check his Powerball ticket only to discover it was worth $50,000.
The frequent player purchased his ticket at Korner Liquors at 3120 Old Washington Road in Waldorf, going with a quick pick, and then went about his business, running errands and tending to his usual routine.
When he finally scanned his ticket at a store, his third-tier $50,000 Powerball prize was verified.
Other customers in the store began congratulating him, but the he was not interested in drawing attention to himself. When fellow customers asked about his win, he simply told them he had won $5.
He took the winning ticket home and called his daughter to share the good news.
“I thought he was playing,” his daughter recalled. “Are you sure you won?” she recalled asking when she accompanied her dad Sept. 2 to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize.
A mechanic for nearly 50 years, the winner said he leads a simple life, so he does not have any big plans for his winnings.
“I just want to sit down,” he said.
For a man whose clients keep him busy, even claiming his prize required him to make some time for himself. The mechanic said he often has to turn off his phone just to get his work done. This time, he turned it off to claim his $50,000 Powerball prize.
