Former Maryland residents “Mr. and Mrs. Spry,” now of Delaware, became millionaires by returning to Maryland to play scratch-offs.
A Delaware couple lived in Maryland for years before making the move east, but they frequently travel back to buy Maryland Lottery tickets, a practice that has made them millionaires.
The two traveled back into Maryland Sept. 2, and across the Chesapeake Bay this time, not to buy tickets but rather to claim a $1 million top prize on the $20 scratch-off game 100X the Cash.
Using the name “Mr. and Mrs. Spry,” they said they like to buy tickets every Friday before returning to their home in Delaware’s Kent County to play.
“Mr. Spry” scratched his ticket and had to look at it repeatedly when he first spotted a 100X symbol with a prize of $10,000. When he did the math in his head, he started to smile and realized that he’d become a millionaire.
“I was stunned. It was the shock of my life,” he said.
As a native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, “Mr. Spry” is an avid angler and said he plans to use the prize to start a business.
“Mr. and Mrs. Spry” purchased their winning ticket near the Maryland-Delaware state line in the crossroads border town of Marydel at Walkers Grocery Store at 18230 Henderson Road. The Caroline County retailer receives a bonus of $1,000 for selling the ticket.
The 100X the Cash game was released in January with seven top prizes of $1 million. The Delaware couple claimed the sixth prize and one top prize is still unclaimed. One $50,000 second-tier prize and two $10,000 third-tier prizes are also unclaimed, along with tens of thousands of additional prizes ranging from $20 to $5,000.
