Errand Puts $50,000 Winning Scratch-off in Bel Air Woman’s Hands

Finds prize on Six Figures scratch-off

A trip to the Safeway in Bel Air put a lucky local resident in the right place at the right time to buy a $50,000-winning scratch-off.

The retiree plays scratch-offs as a hobby and likes to pick up a few games every now and then to play in the evenings. While at Safeway #1652 at 225 Brierhill Drive, she bought two of the $10 Six Figures scratch-offs to enjoy later. The Harford County resident said she likes the process of playing the games and never scans the prize check area on scratch-offs to immediately check for a win.

“I always scratch them off,” she said. “It gives me something fun to do.”

Her first scratch-off failed to reveal a win so she turned to the second instant ticket. One of her numbers matched the winning numbers and then she saw her $50,000 prize. “I got a little excited!” she said. “I couldn’t believe that I won.”

Deciding to verify that Lottery luck had indeed paid her a visit, the Bel Air woman returned to Safeway and asked a clerk for assistance. She phoned her daughter as soon as the clerk verified her $50,000 win.

“We didn’t believe her,” said the daughter, who accompanied her mom to Lottery headquarters to claim the prize. But her mother assured the daughter that a Safeway clerk had just confirmed the big prize.

The loyal player plans to continue enjoying her scratch-off hobby and is putting this prize in the bank “for a rainy day.”

She won the first second-tier prize in this game, which went on sale on Dec. 29. There are still eight $100,000 top prizes remaining unclaimed, along with eight more $50,000 prizes and 26 $10,000 prizes.
