From Sept. 7-Dec. 24, Powerball produced $11.3 million in Maryland prizes, $15.4 million in state contributions
A Powerball jackpot run that lasted more than three months came to an end on Christmas Eve as a ticket sold in Arkansas won the second-largest prize in the game’s history.
The jackpot had been advertised at an estimated annuity value of $1.7 billion with an estimated cash option of $781.3 million. But final ticket sales prior to Wednesday night’s drawing pushed the annuity value to $1.817 billion with a cash option of $834.9 million. Powerball’s largest jackpot of $2.040 billion was won in November 2022 on a ticket sold in California.

RETURN TO THE STATE AND RETAILER COMMISSIONS
Maryland’s Powerball sales during the jackpot run (Sept. 7 through Dec 24) were $61.7 million. 25 cents of each dollar supports state programs and services, leading to $15.4 million in contributions to the state from Powerball sales during that period. The jackpot run also supported local businesses across the state, as retailer sales commissions on Powerball from Sept. 7 through Dec. 24 totaled $3.5 million.
RECORD-SETTING RUN
Wednesday’s drawing was the 47th in the jackpot run, which set a record for the most drawings in a Powerball jackpot cycle. The previous jackpot was hit Sept. 6 at $1.787 billion with two winning tickets sold in Missouri and Texas. This marked only the second time in Powerball’s history that two consecutive jackpot runs surpassed the $1 billion mark.
