She buys tickets every week, an Annapolis woman says, but the only thing on her mind when visiting the grocery store the week before Thanksgiving week was collecting the ingredients for her dinner. While Powerball was definitely not on that list, the $50,000 prize the ticket she bought while shopping was the perfect complement to a fine meal.
“I really had no intention of playing the Lottery,” the event planner said Dec. 1 when she claimed her prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “But when I was finishing up, I walked past the counter and just decided to get a ticket.”
She was shopping on Wednesday, Nov. 19, a Powerball drawing night, so that’s the game she played.
Using a combination of numbers she describes as “lucky, favorite and family birthdays” for her Powerball ticket – ones that she utilizes frequently – she secured her ticket and made her way home to prepare the evening meal. “I remember thinking how great it would be to win $500, which is the most I’ve ever won.”
It was the Anne Arundel County resident’s next day lunch that would be topped off with the discovery of her personal record-breaking Lottery win.
“I checked the ticket on my Lottery app when I was eating,” she said. Even after two or three careful examinations of her numbers and the Powerball result, she was still unconvinced of what she was seeing.
“It was such a shock.”
Maryland’s latest big-money Powerball winner plans to add her winnings to her savings. The Safeway store at 1781 Forest Drive in Annapolis sold the $50,000 ticket.
