Lucky Instant Ticket puts Columbia Man in the Money Again

Columbia’s Kenneth Weinberg is the latest to celebrate a top-prize win with the $50,000 Cash scratch-off.

Wins $50,000 Cash game’s top prize

A familiar face was seen in the Maryland Lottery’s claims center last week. Kenneth Weinberg of Columbia stopped by to claim a $50,000 top prize he discovered when scratching a $50,000 Cash instant ticket. The prize is his fourth Lottery win of $50,000 or more.

The Howard County man is semi-retired, working as an advocate for a counseling group. He buys scratch-offs just about every day, Kenneth told Lottery officials. “I’ve been very lucky with the Lottery,” he reports. Kenneth also lists a $100,000 prize on his Lottery resume.

“I’ve been doing well these last few weeks with $50,000 Cash,” he reported. “When I stopped by the Royal Farms in Elkridge, that’s what I played.” He didn’t scratch his $20 instant ticket right away, however. “I’ve been having an issue with my eyesight, so I rely on the scanner. It’s easier to read.”

After scanning his lucky scratch-off, the device’s message was quite clear, he said. “It directed me to go to the Lottery office, so I knew it was too big a winner for the store to pay.” Asked if his previous wins had prepared him for the message, making it any less exciting, he said, “It was like the first time. My heart started beating so fast.” Kenneth immediately scratched the instant ticket to reveal the $50,000 win. “It was amazing. All I could say was ‘Wow!’”

In the weeks since the game went on sale, the $50,000 Cash scratch-off has risen to the sixth spot on the Lottery’s Top 40 Scratch-offs list. Most $20 scratch-off games list a handful of top prizes while this game debuted with 160. Kenneth’s $50,000 score leaves 129 top prizes remaining and 143 unclaimed second-tier $5,000 prizes.

The happy winner plans to use his prize to fund home remodeling projects. Sharing in the fun of his big win is the management of Royal Farms #054 at 8268 Lark Brown Drive in Elkridge. The Howard County retailer earns a $500 bonus from the Lottery for selling a $50,000 top-prize winning scratch-off.
