Montgomery County Man Takes Time Claiming Bonus Match 5 Prize

Won $50,000 top prize in Dec. 27 drawing

Maryland Lottery winners have 182 days from the drawing date to claim prizes and the deadline was approaching for a Montgomery County man. On Monday, he claimed a $50,000 Bonus Match 5 prize won in a Dec. 27 drawing.

The 65-year-old often plays his lucky game along with other jackpot-style games. The Takoma Park resident recalls there being nothing special about that day in December when he went to purchase games from the Fenton Citgo in Silver Spring. He bought his games early in the day and didn’t check the Bonus Match 5 quick-pick ticket until later. When he scanned the Bonus Match 5 ticket in a store, it showed it was a $50,000 top-prize winner.

“I just calmly left the store after that,” said the self-employed player, smiling. “I was happy, but in no rush to claim the prize. I just wanted to wait.”

And so, he did, not claiming the big prize until Monday morning with just 53 days to spare.

The winner shared with Lottery Officials that he has no initial plans for the prize. Also a winner is Fenton Citgo located at 8333 Fenton Street in Silver Spring. The Montgomery County retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery for its role in selling a top-prize winning Bonus Match 5 ticket.
