A retired maintenance worker from Pennsylvania frequently visits Ocean City with his wife, enjoying everything from people watching along the Boardwalk to long bike rides around town.
A recent trip to their second home, however, gave them an especially memorable experience: the husband scored a $50,000 top prize on the Winning Streak scratch-off. They collected the prize May 21.
The grandparents split much of their time between Wrightsville, Pennsylvania, on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, and Ocean City, on the Atlantic. The two have long admired the architecture in the beachfront resort, which inspired them to purchase a home there years ago.
Although he considers himself only a casual Lottery player, the husband often picks up scratch-offs during stops for gas.
His memorable purchase came as they were headed home from a weekend at the beach. They stopped at the Royal Farms at 1199 Pulaski Highway in Elkton, where he purchased the $5 Winning Streak ticket.
A few days later, after settling in at home, the player had nearly forgotten about the ticket until his wife handed it back to him.
The husband scratched the ticket immediately.
“I saw the horseshoe and asked, ‘Is this right?’” he recalled asking his wife. He had matched a horseshoe in the play area to one among the winning symbols – and it had a $50,000 prize listed under it.
“Yup, it’s right,” she replied after scanning the ticket using the Maryland Lottery app.
With his wife by his side, the granddad claimed his prize on May 21 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The retired maintenance worker said he is considering using the winnings to pay off a vehicle and expects the rest to go into savings.
This marks the player’s largest Lottery prize to date. Prior to the $50,000 win, his biggest Lottery prize was $500 several years ago. He is keeping this win private as he plans to reveal the news to the couple’s four children this fall.
Winning Streak debuted in February with seven $50,000 top prize winners in the mix. There are three top prizes remaining. Royal Farms receives a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize-winning ticket.
