Powerball’s Double Play Gives Lanham Man a $50,000 Prize

Lucky player wins third tier prize

A Prince George’s County man picked the perfect time to get back into the habit of playing Powerball. On New Year’s Day, he won $50,000 on a Powerball Double Play quick-pick ticket.

“I am very grateful,” he told Lottery officials after claiming his prize.

The lucky winner said he started playing again as the jackpot grew ever larger. He purchased a regular Powerball ticket and added Double Play while at Bowie 7-Eleven #41286. The store is located at 9500 Ruby Lockhart Boulevard in Prince George’s County.

The Double Play numbers for the Jan. 1 drawing were 19, 31, 40, 42 and 64; the Powerball was 2. The Lanham resident matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball for the third-tier prize. Double Play offers a top prize of $10 million with a second-tier prize of $500,000.

Double Play is a second drawing that takes place about 30 minutes after the Powerball drawing. Players can add Double Play to their tickets for an additional $1, which our big winner did. Adding the Double Play option allows players to receive one set of numbers for both the regular draw and the Double Play draw.

The New Year’s Day drawing was a lucky one as an $842.4 million jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Michigan and a $2 million winning ticket was sold in Prince George’s County along with the Double Play winning ticket. “I was hoping my other ticket was the $2 million winner,” he said, laughing.

The happy winner said he plans to pay off bills using his prize.

A new year also brings a new Powerball promotion. Maryland players purchasing a Powerball ticket from Jan. 3-16 could win a free $2 Mega Millions ticket awarded at random. The free ticket will print immediately after the Powerball ticket prints. The promotion runs until Jan. 16 unless the jackpot is hit again, and then the promotion will restart.
