Race Car Enthusiast Plays Motor Number and Wins $100,000 on Pick 5

A Prince George’s County racecar enthusiast is revving up the winnings after claiming two $50,000 Pick 5 prizes. His lottery luck was revealed in the Pick 5 evening drawing on Nov. 14 when the numbers 94242 came out straight.

Those numbers came from a stock number on a motor the winner purchased for his racecar a few years ago. He’s been playing the combination ever since.

The Hyattsville player purchased his Pick 5 tickets, individually, from the BP gas station at 4501 Eastern Avenue in Mount Rainier earlier in the day. It wasn’t until that evening he realized he won when checking all of the Pick games for that drawing. Interesting enough, his number partially came out in the Pick 4 drawing too, 9424, but he had not played it.

“I first saw the Pick 4 number was 9424 and thought, “that’s one digit off my number,” he said Nov. 21 when he claimed his prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. “And, then when I saw my number straight in Pick 5, I couldn’t talk for a minute.”

After letting the win sink in a bit, the shocked player woke his wife to share the good news.

“I’m in the bed and he’s calling me for an emergency,” the winner’s wife said, having accompanied him to claim at Lottery headquarters on Nov. 21. “He said, ‘There’s money in my shirt pocket, get it’.”

The confused wife checked, and when she realized he was talking about the Pick 5 tickets, she scanned them herself and saw they each were $50,000 winners.

“She took those tickets and didn’t give them back until we claimed the prize today,” said the fortunate player.

He plans to take his grandchildren to donate to a charity with his winnings. He wants to show them the importance of giving back. He also plans to pay off a new truck purchase and invest.

The BP that sold the ticket has reason to celebrate as well as it receives bonuses totaling $1,000, $500 for each winning Pick 5 ticket.
