Relative’s Important Date Gives Great-Grandma a $100,000 Pick 5 Win

Southern Maryland resident claims biggest prize of her life

She’s had Lottery wins before in Maryland and New York after playing relatives’ birthdays and anniversaries, said the great-grandmother. But never has she claimed any prize close to the $100,000 windfall that came her way thanks to two Pick 5 tickets she bought for the Aug. 30 drawings.

The happy Charles County resident said a relative usually buys her Lottery games for her, and that was the case on Aug. 30. The relative visited Lee’s Market in Indian Head to pick up two Pick 5 tickets for her and a couple for himself.

That day, she decided to try her Pick 5 luck using a date that is important to one of her family members as her five digits. Her relative bought two $1 straight bets on 82869 for the Pick 5 midday and evening drawings for her and then picked different numbers for his own tickets.

Lottery luck showered both of her Pick 5 tickets with a pair of $50,000 prizes in the Aug. 30 midday drawing. “I found out later that afternoon,” said the relative. “I was like, ‘I think you hit the number.’” “We were shocked,” she added, smiling.

Off he went to a Lottery retailer to confirm that the two tickets won. First, he scanned them on the store’s Lottery vending machine and a message told him to see the Lottery. He then scanned the tickets on the store’s countertop ticket checker and saw, “Congratulations! $50,000 Winner!”

The anonymous winner lives with family members and plans to spend some of her $100,000 prize on home remodeling projects and a family vacation. She will then put remaining funds into the bank. “We are so happy,” she said.

Also celebrating is Lee’s Market located at 4310 Hawthorne Road in Indian Head. The Charles County business will receive a $500 Lottery bonus for each of the two $50,000-winning Pick 5 tickets.
